Pitch Black Possible SIRs: Giratina Stealing the Spotlight with Darkrai Vibes?

Japan’s Abyss Eye drops in just a few days (May 22), and the hype for English Pitch Black (July 17) is already pitch perfect. We’ve seen the four main Pokemon ex (including those shiny new Mega Evolutions), but the real chase cards ... the Special Illustration Rares (SIRs) ...are where this set could shine brightest.


The Confirmed Hits So Far

We’ve got early looks at some premium artwork, including a stunning Mega Chandelure SIR that’s giving major spooky, starry-night energy. It’s easily one of the early standouts for collectors. Trainer cards like Gwynn are also popping up in SIR treatment.

But the internet is buzzing about something else right now...

Giratina full art (possibly around the /081 mark) featuring classic Roman/Greek-style pillars in the background. This screams Pokémon Legends: Arceus influence - think Distortion World meets ancient ruins, with Giratina looking absolutely menacing and otherworldly. The "Darkrai vibes" are real here. Connecting the Golden AR with the Misty SIR?

Here’s the big question for Pitch Black collectors: How do these high-end arts link up? We’re hoping for a thematic bridge between a potential golden alternate rare (AR) treatment and a misty, ethereal SIR variant. Imagine a gold etched Giratina ex or supporter card echoing the pillar motif, contrasted with a foggy, dream-like Darkrai/Mega Darkrai SIR. That would create insane pull tension and binder goals.

With six SIRs total in the set (Pokémon and Supporters), there’s room for more bangers. Will we get a full Giratina SIR to match the full art? Or a Darkrai trainer card that completes the nightmare duo?

Why This Set Feels Special

Pitch Black keeps the Mega Evolution series lean (115+ cards) but loaded with chase value: 6 Mega ex, 11 Illustration Rares, 18 Ultra Rares, and those 6 SIRs. Japan gets first crack at pulls this week... expect leaks and early openings to flood timelines.

If the Giratina full art lives up to the early descriptions, it might dethrone even the Mega Chandelure as the set’s artwork king. Darkrai sets don’t come often, and tying in Giratina’s lore feels like a love letter to Sinnoh fans.
