What a week to be a South Florida sports fan. The NBA Draft just wrapped its first round, the most talked-about trade in years dropped right before it, and oh yeah ... Brady Tkachuk is now a Florida Panther. Add in the fact that Pokémon Pitch Black preorders are starting to appear in the wild, and there's a lot to unpack. Let's get into it.
🏀 2026 NBA Draft: The Class Is Here
Round 1 went down Tuesday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and this draft class is loaded. The Washington Wizards opened with the No. 1 pick and selected BYU forward AJ Dybantsa ... the consensus top prospect who now has the weight of a franchise rebuild on his shoulders. The Utah Jazz took Kansas guard Darryn Peterson at No. 2, the Memphis Grizzlies grabbed Duke forward Cameron Boozer at No. 3, and the Chicago Bulls rounded out the top four with UNC forward Caleb Wilson.
Michigan had a monster night - the Wolverines had three players drafted in the first round including Morez Johnson to Dallas at No. 9, Yaxel Lendeborg to Golden State at No. 11, and Aday Mara to OKC at No. 12. Dusty May just took over as Mavs head coach earlier this week and immediately drafted his own former player. That's a full-circle moment right there.
Notable: the Bucks used Miami's No. 13 pick .. acquired in the Giannis trade ... to take Tennessee's Nate Ament. That pick was part of the Heat's price for landing the Greek Freak. More on that below.
From a card perspective, keep your eye on AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer as the three names that will dominate the early rookie card market. Dybantsa especially - No. 1 overall picks always generate immediate collector demand and his first Topps and Panini autos will be the most sought-after cards of the draft class. The race to grab his RCs before prices climb starts now.
🌴 Florida Is Now the Center of the Sports Universe
Let's talk about what happened in the 24 hours before the draft, because it was historic for South Florida sports.
Sunday ... Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. The Ottawa Senators traded their captain to Florida in a blockbuster deal, reuniting Brady with his brother Matthew Tkachuk for the first time in their NHL careers. The Panthers gave up the No. 9 and No. 25 picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, a conditional 2029 first-rounder, and a 2027 second-rounder to make it happen. Brady showed up at his presser and said it plainly: "Their sole focus is winning, and that's something I'm just excited to join and help out." The Tkachuk brothers on the same line - alongside Aleksander Barkov and Sam Bennett ... is genuinely terrifying for the rest of the Eastern Conference. The Panthers have back-to-back Cup championships in 2024 and 2025, and GM Bill Zito is already saying they're not done making moves.
Monday ... Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat. One day later, the other shoe dropped. In one of the biggest trades in NBA history, the Heat landed the two-time MVP from the Milwaukee Bucks. The price: Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and three first-round picks including No. 13 in Tuesday's draft. Giannis is 31, a 10-time All-Star, Finals MVP, and one of the most dominant forces the NBA has ever seen. Now he's pairing with Bam Adebayo in a loaded South Florida frontcourt, with Pat Riley .. who is not retiring, not stepping aside ... running the show.
Think about what just happened here. In the span of 24 hours, South Florida added Brady Tkachuk AND Giannis Antetokounmpo. Two elite athletes in their prime, both choosing the same place. You know what Florida has that almost everywhere else doesn't? No state income tax. When you're signing contracts worth tens of millions of dollars, that difference is real money. Brady, Giannis, Matthew Tkachuk, Bam Adebayo ... all living and playing in the sunshine state, all keeping more of what they earn. The no-tax, warm-weather combo is a genuine recruiting advantage and South Florida is cashing in on it right now.
Heat year 1 with Giannis will be a process ... the roster still needs to be filled out around the core. But year 2? With Pat Riley having a full offseason to build around Giannis and Bam? That team is going to be a serious championship contender. The East is officially wide open again.
Card angle: Giannis Heat cards are going to be highly collectible. Any rookie-year Bucks cards featuring Giannis are evergreen long-term holds, and his first Heat-era Prizm and Topps cards will be the ones to chase this coming season.
